What's on this month?
By Baldeep Chana, 1st December 2019
The festive season is now officially upon us, and there are plenty of events taking place this December to immerse you fully into this magical time of year. One energetic and noble way to start your festivities is to take part in the Christmas Pudding Race on Saturday the 7th of this month. Most people are familiar with the egg and spoon race and this is a festive and more flamboyant take on that concept. Contestants in teams of six, don fancy dress and race around a course strewn with flour-filled balloons, foam jets and other obstacles, all whilst trying to balance a Christmas Pudding on a flimsy plate. The race takes place at Covent Garden Piazza, and if you’re wondering why this event is noble, it is because it is held to raise money for Cancer Research.
Are you fretting about what unique items to get your loved ones for Christmas this year? If you’re in need of some inspiration in this department then head to the House of Illustration Winter Fair. This fair takes place on Saturday the 14th and hosts over 150 independent stallholders that set up shop for that one day. Illustrated calendars, clothing, stationary, ceramics, greetings cards and glassware will all be available for you to purchase. One thing that is guaranteed, is that all the artworks are environmentally friendly and plastic free.
One place that has a festive feel all year round is the circus, and this Christmas you’ll be able to enjoy the enchantment of the circus as it was during its golden era. Circus 1903 is not a play with a storyline, but is a show filled with good old-fashioned thrills and spills as from turn of the century entertainment, with sew-sawing acrobats, a contortionist, jugglers, a blindfolded knife thrower and high wire performers. The show has life size elephant puppets that are cleverly animated with humour to give them endearing characters. This show takes place at the Southbank Centre from the 19th of December and is a thrilling day out for all ages of people.
However, you choose to spend your time this month, I wish you all a very merry Christmas!
