Tackling the Fear of Speaking a Foreign Language | Sophie Mihell-Hale
Do you enjoy learning a new language?
Endlessly rewarding to know yet often troublesome to grasp, anyone who has ever learnt a foreign language will be aware of the obstacles encountered on the road to mastering it.
For some people, these challenges can develop into a fully fledged fear of speaking the language- something that can hinder anyone’s progress, no matter how naturally apt they are. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to help your confidence grow.
Step one is to get used to saying the words out loud to yourself, learning how to pronounce them until they just roll off the tongue. It is also a great technique for remembering words and phrases, helping imprint them on your mind.
The next tentative step is to try speaking a few words in front of people. One way to do this is to join a class. This familiarises you with speaking the language in front of others, but in a ‘safe’ situation where you and your fellow students can learn and make mistakes together.
Step three is the big one- trying out your Linguistic skills on a NativeSpeaker! It will be scary at first but few language exercises could be more rewarding and you will find your confidence soaring in no time!
Finally, remember, it is normal to make mistakes and, rather than laughing at you, people will be more than impressed by all the efforts you have gone to speak their language.
