Netflix and Cheer | Maureen Good

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, the time to snuggle on the sofa in front of the TV is almost upon us once more. What everyone needs at this time of year is some humour and light-heartedness. Here are, therefore, some of my favourite stand-up comedy specials available on Netflix, for your enjoyment and relaxation.

Dark by Daniel Sloss

In his first comedy special, Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss stuns the audience with his wit and sharp portrayal of the relationship between sadness and humour. Whilst this may seem "dark" indeed, he manages to keep a light-hearted tone through the communication of his obvious passion for laughter, making light of even the starkest situations.

Middleditch and Schwartz

This comedy duo composed of actors Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz is a three-part Netflix special improv show. Asking the audience for their set-up, Middleditch and Schwartz embark on hilarious, completely improvised scenarios, acting out multiple characters and seamlessly incorporating details found in reality, to provide the audience with some much-needed comic relief, leaving the room amazed by their talent.

Son of Patricia by Trevor Noah

Trevor Noah's stand-up routine consists of a combination of varied accents that will make you travel across the globe, situational comedy, and subtle social commentary without falling into condescension. Discussing topics ranging from US politics to South African culture or his love of James Bond, Noah is entertaining and interesting, talented and humble all in one.

There are many more golden comedians to be found in the treasure trove that is Netflix, indeed there are too many for a single article.

Over to you! What are your suggestions for an evening of laughter and cheer as the winter nights draw in?
