'Must-Try Dutch Delicacies'

September 23, 2018

Do you enjoy trying the local cuisine when travelling abroad?

Food is a huge part of any #cultural experience and it is always well worth exploring local delicacies wherever you happen to be travelling. #Dutch #cuisine is no exception and while it may sit in the shadow of its more famous French and Italian counterparts, there is an array of #culinary #delights that are a must-try on any #Netherlands #visit.

Bitterballen

The ideal accompaniment to a round of beers, most Dutch cafes and bars will have bitterballen on the menu. The bite size snack consists of minced meat and seasonings, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried and while they may not be the healthiest they are so tasty that you will find yourself coming back to the plate again and again!

Poffertjes

Winter in Holland is best served with a serving of poffertjes, miniature fluffy pancakes that add a bit of warmth to even the coldest of days. Usually sold at food stalls and markets, the sweet treats are most commonly served with butter and lashes of powdered sugar. The sugar may make it messy, but that is half the fun with this unique Dutch nibble.

Stroopwafels

Another one for sugar lovers, stroopwafels (‘syrup waffles’) are a Dutch classic dating back to the 1700s. The chewy cookie-type treat is made of two thin slices of baked waffle batter and filled with a thick caramel-like syrup. Sold everywhere from the supermarket to cafes and delightful cool or slightly warmed with runny syrup, it is little surprise stroopwafels have remained a Dutch favourite for centuries.
