Graphic Nouvelle

‘Blue Is the Warmest Colour’ scooped the acclaimed Palme D’Or award at Cannes Film Festival 2013. The French indie film explores protagonist Adèle and her journey to discovering her sexuality and, herself. Unbeknown to many, the film is actually an adaptation of a #graphic novel, cleverly styled in black and white, with various dashes of blue dictated by Adèle’s ‘colourful’ love life.

Many regard graphic novels as the #future of #filmmaking. The #comic strip layout makes it easy to allocate scenes and scripting, more so than converting a novel into a screenplay. Moreover, the common misconception that graphic novels and ‘comics’ are children’s play from the Orient is based more on fiction than fact. France, particularly, has embraced this storytelling form – films may prove to be longer, yet with a very precise attention to detail.

Are you feeling bored or don’t have the time to read the average 500 odd-page novel? Try something new. Graphic novels sharpen the eye – in addition to reading character dialogue and settings, the vivid images themselves tell a story within a story. Forbidden Planet, the leading comic book store has shops all over the country; additionally, Waterstones is further stocking the comic genre. Now is the time to unleash your inner #geek.
