The Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon’s Hidden Gem

Thinking of visiting Portugal? My top tip is Lisbon.

The #Portuguese #Capital #Lisbon is home to some of #Europe’s most intriguing #museums and #attractions, from the magnificent #Belem #Tower to the #Castle of #Sao George perched atop the #city’s hills. One of its best, however, has to be the Gulbenkian Museum, or #Museu #Calouste Gulbenkian as it is known in #Portuguese.

A hidden gem, the museum brings together the extensive #art and #artefact #collection of lifelong enthusiast #Calouste #Gulbenkian. An #Armenian #oil #magnate, who in his time was one of the #world’s #wealthiest men, Gulbenkian spent years amassing one of the largest #private #art #collections on record, with over 6000 pieces in all. Following his death in 1955, and in accordance with his wishes, the Gulbenkian Museum was set up to display the impressive #acquisitions.

The museum, opened in #1969, showcases an array of #pieces and #artworks, displayed in #geographic and #chronological order and spanning every era from the #12th century to the #twentieth. Each room brings a new focus to be enjoyed, winding from #Middle #Eastern art to beautifully #woven #rugs and #fabrics to stunning pieces of #Oriental #porcelain and #sculpture.

The #tour is completed with Gulbenkian’s vast collection of #paintings, which includes works from #Rembrandt, #Monet and more. Perhaps most mesmerizing of all however, is the #Lalique room, which exhibits show stopping pieces from the renowned #glass #designer #Rene Lalique.
