Four Phrases to Know in Brazilian Portuguese

Learning Portuguese in #Brazil is different from mastering it from a textbook. The daily #life there exposes you to many expressions that you would not find in the #classroom. Here are four typical sayings found in Brazil:

“Pode Deixar”

It literally translates to ‘you can leave’ but has the meaning of ‘I’ll do it’, ‘I’ll take care of that’ or ‘leave it to me’.

For example, if you say to a friend who is going for a #night out, ‘have fun! And have a #drink for me!’ in Brazil they may reply ‘pode deixar!'

“Beleza”

This is a great way to greet people. It means ‘how are you?’ For example, “Oi, beleza?” translates to “Hi, how’s it going?” The real translation of ‘beleza’ is ‘beauty’ but it is commonly used in this informal way. It can also be used to mean ‘ok’ or ‘that’s fine’.

“Ta bom”

This is an abbreviation of ‘está bom’. It is very common in Brazil and is often shortened to just “ta”. It means “ok”.

“Tudo jóia”

When translating ‘jóia’ in #English, it means ‘jewelry’. But you can use it when someone asks how you are to say that you are feeling good or great. For example:

- Tudo bom? (How are you?)

- Tudo jóia! E você?
